Optival is part of the 2024 Service Design Competition under the Philips Healthcare brief. It emerged from a five-month-long project addressing the vicious cycle of NHS nurses experiencing burnout due to overload. This burnout leads to significant workforce shortages in a deeply fragmented system.

Our initial inquiry was, “How might we build resilience by supporting nurses in navigating the fragmented NHS healthcare system?” Further research led us to focus on international nurses, culminating in the development of Optival.

My role in this project was multifaceted, as was that of everyone on the team. I contributed through research, synthesis, identifying intervention points, opportunities, and gaps, and ultimately in creating this multilayered service. Despite the seriousness of the issue, working on this project with the team was a truly rewarding and enjoyable experience.
