This research project was part of the Envisioning Futures module, focusing on deeply understanding real-world problems and using envisioning and speculation as methodologies to conceive solutions.

Buenaventura, a coastal town in Colombia, is home to a large settlement of Bajamarian people who primarily live in stilted houses on land reclaimed from the ocean. They face systemic racism, violence, ongoing crime, and poverty, among other challenges. Our guiding question was: “How might we envision a future where these people become empowered and lead happier, safer lives?”

My role in the team included research, envisioning preferred futures, and placemaking, which ultimately led to the creation of a gamified experience, the Penguiras, to share indigenous knowledge.

Feedback and Pivots

The project at this stage was too big, the use of AI overtook the essence of some of the very important parts of the project like communication, technologies and even access. While the team still believed that Pluriversidad Del Manglar was imprtant and relevant especially in the scope of an Envisioning Project we needed to pivot and look at a smaller scale intervention point.
